Tobacco Silk Quilts
Greta Mikkelsen transforms rare 19th century tobacco silks into
unique fine art textiles.
About The Artist
Greta Mikkelsen is a Southern Oregon textile artist who fell in love with the fascinating world of antique tobacco silks.
Trained in printmaking and oil painting, she now channels that same balance of precision and creativity into hand-stitched quilts that honor the history of these century-old fabric treasures.
Antique tobacco silks were small printed fabric pictures tucked into cigarette and tobacco packages in the late 1800s and early 1900s to build brand loyalty.
These colorful silks, depicting everything from flowers to flags, became prized collectibles, especially among women who often sewed them into household linens and quilts.
